Radio Station Logo Design Screen Captures and Explanations - Buzz

the green diamond is the background shape for the logo

to create the 'B' character, I used a rectangle and a triangle

the small triangle forms the indent of the letter

to create the 'U', I drew a square with a triangle underneath it
small triangular indents added to the right and left side of a rectangle to make the 'Z' characters

this was repeated to make the second 'Z' character

Process

To design this logo, Buzz, I used Photoshop. Photoshop enabled me to use the shape tools and various other tools in order to allow precise and unlimited design on the program. I used Photoshop's tools and devices to, piece by piece, collate my design. There were plenty of different fonts to chose from, however I decided to create the letters BUZZ with different shapes using the shape tools.
A combination of coloured rectangles, a square and a few triangles make up the font for my logo. To start off, I drew a proportionate square and rotated it to look like a diamond; I then coloured this green with the paint bucket tool. To create the 'B', I used the shape tool to produce a rectangle, and then the custom shape tool to create a triangle that acts as the indent in the letter. I used the shape tools to create the letter 'U'. I used the shape tool to draw a square, and the custom shape tool to draw a triangle which was rotated to sit flush with the bottom side of the square. Similarly to the letter 'B', I used the shape tool to draw a rectangle and the custom shape tool to draw two triangles, at the top on the left hand side and at the bottom on the right hand side, in order to create the two 'Z' characters.

File Format

I would save my logo in a Portable Document Format (.pdf); a metafile. A PDF file is made up of pixels as well as mathematical data (shapes, curves, equations) which is used to produce an image. A PDF file can be opened in any system, as it does not require the use of any specific program; therefore, OW! Music could access the PDF file in the office as well as in client meetings on tablets or laptops. Also, as a PDF file is stored in a small size it is easy to share via e-mail or on the Internet. A PDF file cannot be manipulated once it is saved saved as it is stored in a "read only" format. This is an advantage for OW! Music as they can use the logo on letterheads, their website and on various mediums of merchandise; however, without the worry that someone will take the image from the website etc. and edit the image in their own time.

Decisions

I made the decision to stick to my hand-drawn designs as much as I could and attempt to keep the design looking the same. I think overall I was successful, the green and purple colours stand out and are eye catching. The use of the shapes, combinations of the shapes and presentation of the shapes, are a good representation of my hand drawn designs and have been useful tools to allow me to design it as accurate to my hand drawn designs as possible.

Revisions

I made no revisions to my hand drawn designs whilst creating them of Photoshop. I kept the colour scheme as true to my hand drawn designs as possible as I thought the colours complimented each other and were successful in drawing attention to the logo.

What Went Well?

This design went well as the Photoshop design is very similar to my hand drawn designs. I think this design is abstract and noticeable and will stand out from a crowd of logo' that use basic colours and conventional designs.

Even Better If?

I think my design could be even better if the I made the characters more square shaped, rather than rectangular. I think this would compliment the diamond shape in the background and will experiment on Photoshop to see whether or not this idea will be taken forward.
