Analysing an Ident
This ident was designed for BBC One.
The British Broadcasting Corporation was launched on November 2nd 1936.
The BBC has been renamed and/or rebranded three times; BBC TV in 1960, this name was used until the launch of sister channel BBC2 in 1964, at which point the BBC TV channel became known as BBC1, the current spelling of BBC One was adopted in 1997.
You can see the BBC One programme schedule through this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/programmes/schedules
The BBC broadcasts TV shows like; QI, Homes Under the Hammer, Bargain Hunt, Doctors, Flog it!, Escape to the Country, The One Show, Pointless, Eastenders and BBC News.
I would say that BBC One's target audience is different for each program, for example Homes Under the Hammer is aimed at adults, whereas Doctor Who is aimed at children and young teens.
In this ident for BBC One, we see humans -men, women, children- and penguins, being the majority, ice skating around a rink. The characters in the ident are skating in a circular formation, meaning that BBC One is a well rounded television channel, that caters for many different ages and genres. The ident also implies that the BBC shows many nature based programmes due to the penguins being the focus of the ad.
The audience reacts well to this ident as they find it odd to see penguins skating around an ice rink as if they were in their own environment. The audience enjoy watching the ident as it is entertaining to see the penguins in an unnatural setting, behaving naturally.
The ident creates a naturalistic assumption about BBC One as you expect the channel to show programmes related to nature and, in this case, penguins and so on. It also creates the assumption that BBC One is a more documentary based channel, rather than any other genre.
I think it is an effective ident as it an accurate representation of what types of programmes BBC One plays; nature documentaries as well as children's and family shows. Also, it is effective because it catches the audience's attention due to the unusual idea of seeing penguins at a public ice rink, as well as the circular motion drawing the audiences attention to the screen.
